Based on a personal experience of wearing a niqab in France after it was prohibited, By any Means A-Veilable is Charlotte Schiøler’s first short film.
Schiøler, is a nomad roaming around for pasture between NYC, Paris and Copenhagen. She is a dancer, chorographer, writer, actress, director and producer.
Born in Denmark, she trained at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in London and Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique in Paris. In 1997, she joined Elsa Wolliaston’s (Kenya) Paris based dance company and directed Afrobic, a 60 minutes teaching video on African dance. In 2000 and in 2001 she was awarded grants by the Danish Royal Ministry of Culture to explore rituals of passage in Senegal and Gabon.
With more grants from Centre National de la Danse and the Danish Actors Union, she began to create her own body of work in 2001. She is inspired by choreographers and performers such as Mary Wigman, Waleska Gertz and Otto Gross. Her body of work includes: Yes, we have No Bananas!, No Space! and Lynndie England, an interactive performance with audience participation in the roles of the persecutor and the victim.
Schiøler has established her personal style in making satire and social commentary using dance, theater, cabaret and film in a burlesque and surrealist way. Her plays have toured internationally and won critical acclaim in Toronto, NYC, London and Paris.
She recently starred in Better Love by Thomas Campbell and in 4:84, an adaptation of Sarah Kane’s Psychosis, by Jacky Katu. Both have just been compleeted. In 2014, she co-produced WA, a record of African fusion featuring Roro M'Bonda and the single, Better Love by Surveillance.
